Southern Cross by Cally
I love yacht rock. I can listen to it all day long. I am partial to The Doobie Brothers, Ambrosia, Christopher Cross, Little River Band, and (of course) Seals & Croft. I can hear certain songs and remember what it felt like listening to that specific song when I was a little girl in San Augustine (and maybe Nacogdoches). And I will die on the hill by insisting that Toto and Hall & Oates are NOT yacht rock, but I digress.
I have found myself listening to yacht rock when I am at work on the weekends or in the office by myself. My job is very stressful so I find the familiarity of the songs very soothing. A few weekends ago, I spent all day Saturday and Sunday trying to get caught up at work. I had the office completely to myself. So I turned up the trusty yacht rock station on Apple Music. I found myself fixated on the song “Southern Cross” by Crosby, Stills & Nash. And I have been fixated on it ever since. And I’m not really sure why.
So I looked up the lyrics and studied them. I think it has finally clicked why I’ve been fixated.
Excerpt from “Southern Cross” by Crosby, Stills & Nash
(I think about)
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me, larger voices calling
What heaven brought you and me
Cannot be forgotten
(I’ve been around the world)
I have been around the world (Looking)Looking for that ________________Who knows love can endureAnd you know it willWhen you see the Southern Cross for the first timeYou understand now why you came this way‘Cause the truth you might beRunning from is so smallBut it’s as big as the promiseThe promise of a coming daySo I’m sailing for tomorrow,My dreams are a-dyingAnd my love is an anchor tied to youTied with a silver chain I have my shipAnd all her flags are a-flyingShe is all that I have leftAnd music is her name(I think about)Think about how many times I have fallenSpirits are using me, larger voices callingWhat heaven brought you and meCannot be forgotten(I’ve been around the world)I have been around the world (Looking)Looking for that ________________Who knows love can endureAnd you know it willAnd you know it will
Although the song was written about a broken relationship, I feel like it also speaks to our relationship with God. How many times we have questioned why something has happened to us (good or bad) and what it means. How many times we have fallen short of what we think God has/had in mind for us. How many times we have felt unworthy of His love for us. Sometimes we find that something bigger and better was in store for us all along. Sometimes we find that we just had to live out being disappointed or upset. Sometimes we never figure it out.
So I will continue to lean on my faith that God knows what is best for me and for all of us. And I will continue to pray that we are all blessed by His love in all that we do.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. Proverbs 16:9
God’s love for us is bigger than we can imagine. And His love will be with us through it all. And you know it will.
